AGATA
The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array
AGATA is a European-led, next-generation gamma-ray spectrometer offering unprecedented sensitivity and precision for nuclear structure research. Unlike conventional arrays, AGATA uses gamma-ray tracking: a technique that reconstructs the path of each gamma ray by locating every interaction point within the detectors. This gives AGATA a resolving power more than an order of magnitude greater than that of previous leading arrays. AGATA is a traveling detector, designed to be deployed at Europe’s premier accelerator facilities—including GANIL, FAIR, HIE-ISOLDE, LNL, and JYFL—where it exploits both stable and radioactive ion beams across a wide range of energies.
The science case of AGATA spans the full nuclear landscape. It reveals how shell structure evolves far from stability, driven by the nucleon–nucleon interaction and the emergence of new magic numbers. It probes the coexistence of spherical, deformed, and even hyperdeformed shapes within a single nucleus, and uncovers exotic symmetries such as tetrahedral or octupole deformation. AGATA measures isospin symmetry in mirror nuclei, explores the nature of pair correlations and the onset of collectivity, and investigates the response of nuclei to extreme angular momentum and temperature. It also contributes to nuclear astrophysics.
