🇮🇹 LNL Campaign (Legnaro, Italy)

INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro

1. General Introduction

The LNL Campaign represents the current major physics phase of the AGATA (Advanced Gamma Tracking Array) following its previous installations at GSI (Germany) and GANIL (France).

AGATA was installed at INFN–LNL in 2022 for a multi-year experimental campaign. The array is coupled primarily to the XTU Tandem accelerator and ALPI superconducting linear accelerator, providing high-intensity stable heavy-ion beams.

The LNL campaign constitutes the fourth large-scale physics campaign of AGATA and supports a broad experimental program approved through dedicated Pre-PAC (Pre-Programme Advisory Committee) workshops.

2. Scientific Goals

The LNL campaign focuses on high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy using stable heavy-ion beams. Main scientific objectives include:

  • Nuclear structure studies at high angular momentum

  • Investigation of shell evolution near closed shells

  • Spectroscopy of neutron-rich nuclei populated via multinucleon transfer

  • Shape coexistence and collective excitations

  • Isospin symmetry and mirror nuclei studies

  • Lifetime measurements and transition probability determinations

  • Studies using fusion-evaporation and transfer reactions

The campaign exploits AGATA’s gamma-ray tracking capability combined with ancillary detector systems for charged particles and neutrons.

3. List of Spokespersons

For the current LNL campaign:

  • Campaign Spokesperson:

    • Magda Zielińska (France)

(Spokespersons may vary per approved experiment; each experiment has its own designated spokesperson team.)

4. Local Project Managers

  • Local Campaign Manager (LNL):

    • Alain Goasduff (INFN–LNL, Italy)

Previous local coordination roles have also involved LNL scientific and technical staff depending on campaign phase and installation stage.

5. Workshop Announcements (Pre-PAC Workshops)

The LNL campaign operates via regular Pre-PAC Workshops where Letters of Intent (LoIs) are submitted and discussed.

Examples of recent LNL-related workshops:

  • 5th AGATA Pre-PAC Workshop (May 2024, Legnaro)

  • 6th AGATA Pre-PAC Workshop (November 2024, Legnaro)

  • 7th AGATA Pre-PAC Workshop (July 2025, Legnaro)

Workshops typically include:

  • Presentation of proposed experiments

  • Technical feasibility discussions

  • Scheduling strategy

  • Review of detector configurations

6. Links to Indico Registration Pages

Registration and documentation for workshops and AGATA Weeks are typically managed via dedicated Indico pages hosted by:

  • INFN–LNL Indico platform

  • AGATA collaboration Indico pages

Each workshop announcement includes a link to:

  • Registration form

  • Abstract/LoI submission portal

  • Agenda

  • Practical information (accommodation, travel)

(Links change per workshop and are provided in the corresponding announcement pages.)

7. Experimental Schedules

The LNL campaign is structured in beam periods allocated after Pre-PAC evaluation and formal approval.

The schedule typically includes:

  • Beam time blocks assigned to approved experiments

  • Technical setup periods

  • Detector calibration runs

  • Maintenance intervals

  • Data-taking campaigns grouped by reaction type

Beam time allocation is coordinated between:

  • AGATA Collaboration

  • LNL accelerator management

  • Local technical coordination teams

8. Campaign Documentation

Available documentation for the LNL campaign includes:

  • Pre-PAC circulars

  • Letters of Intent (LoIs)

  • Technical notes

  • Detector configuration documentation

  • Data acquisition guidelines

  • Safety and operational manuals

  • Analysis workshop materials

Documentation is distributed internally within the collaboration and partially through the official AGATA website
