1. General Introduction

The GSI Campaign was the first large-scale physics campaign of the AGATA after the demonstrator phase.

AGATA was installed at GSI in Darmstadt in 2012 and operated there until 2021. The array was coupled primarily to relativistic heavy-ion beams provided by the SIS18 synchrotron and associated fragment separator facilities.

This campaign marked a major milestone, as it allowed AGATA to demonstrate its full gamma-ray tracking capabilities under relativistic conditions, where accurate Doppler correction is essential.

2. Scientific Goals

The GSI campaign focused on fast-beam gamma spectroscopy and nuclear structure studies far from stability. Main scientific objectives included:

  • Spectroscopy of exotic nuclei produced via projectile fragmentation

  • Coulomb excitation at relativistic energies

  • Single-particle structure near shell closures

  • Evolution of shell structure far from stability

  • Collectivity and deformation in neutron-rich nuclei

  • Lifetime measurements under fast-beam conditions

  • Validation of gamma-ray tracking under extreme Doppler broadening

A major scientific challenge addressed during this campaign was precise Doppler correction for nuclei moving at high velocities (v/c ≈ 0.3–0.5), where AGATA’s position sensitivity significantly improved energy resolution.

3. List of Spokespersons

Campaign-level coordination involved designated AGATA spokespersons during different phases.

The overall AGATA campaign at GSI was coordinated by senior members of the AGATA collaboration, while each approved experiment had its own spokesperson(s).

(Individual experiment spokespersons varied throughout the 2012–2021 period depending on the approved proposal.)

4. Local Project Managers

  • Local Campaign Manager (GSI phase):

    • Kathrin Wimmer (Germany) (associated with GSI/FAIR operations in later phases)

Local coordination required close collaboration between:

  • AGATA technical teams

  • GSI accelerator division

  • Experimental area coordinators

5. Workshop Announcements

The GSI campaign included:

  • Dedicated Pre-PAC workshops

  • AGATA Weeks hosted at GSI

  • Annual AGATA Collaboration Meetings

  • Technical and analysis workshops

These workshops included:

  • Presentation of experimental proposals

  • Technical integration discussions

  • Configuration planning

  • Performance review of tracking algorithms

  • Planning for beamtime allocation

6. Links to Indico Registration Pages

Workshop registration and documentation were handled through:

  • GSI Indico platforms

  • AGATA collaboration Indico pages

Each event typically included:

  • Online registration

  • Abstract submission

  • Agenda

  • Practical information

  • Presentation uploads

(Links were event-specific and updated per workshop.)

7. Experimental Schedules

The GSI campaign operated in structured beamtime blocks allocated after proposal approval.

Typical scheduling structure:

  • Setup and detector configuration period

  • Calibration runs

  • Beam delivery blocks

  • Fast-beam experiments using fragmentation reactions

  • Coulomb excitation experiments

  • Technical maintenance and optimization intervals

Beam scheduling was coordinated between:

  • AGATA Collaboration

  • GSI accelerator management

  • Experimental program advisory committees

8. Campaign Documentation

Available documentation from the GSI campaign includes:

  • Pre-PAC circulars and call for proposals

  • Letters of Intent (LoIs)

  • Technical integration documents

  • Gamma-ray tracking performance reports

  • Doppler correction methodology documentation

  • Detector geometry and configuration files

  • Data acquisition manuals

  • Published physics results

The GSI campaign generated a large number of peer-reviewed publications and served as a validation platform for AGATA’s full tracking capabilities in relativistic regimes.
